Kristi was born missing her right fibula and with a short right femur which resulted in several complex surgeries including a Van Nes rotationplasty and a leg-lengthening procedure. Kristi trained as an actor at Grant MacEwan’s Theatre Arts Program from 1999-2001, and then at the University of Alberta’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting Program from 2001-2004. Since then, Kristi has worked as an actor with Catalyst Theatre, Theatre Aquarius, the Confed Centre, Vertigo Theatre, the National Arts Centre, Theatre Network, Edmonton Opera, Wildside Productions, Northern Light Theatre, L’Unithéâtre, the Nexfest Arts Company, Ghost River Theatre, Freewill Players, the Citadel Theatre, Teatro la Quindicina, Shadow Theatre, the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, the Edmonton Street Performers’ Festival, Crosswalk Theatre, Surreal SoReal Theatre, the Mayfield Dinner Theatre, Azimuth Theatre, the Alberta Workers’ Health Centre, Concrete Theatre, Ground Zero Theatre, Trunk Theatre, the University of Alberta, Firefly Theatre, and many other Independent companies throughout the city making them one of Edmonton’s most prolific actors. In addition to her career as a freelance actor, Hansen co-founded Edmonton’s women and underrepresented genders’ theatre company, The Maggie Tree, whose mandate is to support the development and visibility of women and people of underrepresented genders in creative leadership roles in the arts. The company was launched in 2007 by Vanessa Sabourin and Hansen. The Maggie Tree continues to provide opportunities for women and people of underrepresented genders to work together, and share universal stories through a femme perspective for a non-gender specific audience. Kristi’s work as a theatre artist includes dramaturgy, direction, stage management, administration, and teaching. Kristi is the former co-Artistic Producer of Azimuth Theatre: a socially engaged theatre company that creates and presents original Canadian performance that examines society and the human condition with a critical gaze. She is the current Associate Artist at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Kristi’s one-person show, Woody, is a compare/contrast of her life as an amputee juxtaposed with other amputees living all over the world and the struggles, joys, and lessons that come along as a disabled human.
